Hi everyone, When I was growing up, St Catherine’s Hill overlooking Winchester was a good place on a Sunday to go for a family walk. In those days, there wasn’t a car park, just a layby to park your car in. Then a gap in the hedgerow to take you to the field at the bottom of St Catherine’s Hill. There were no steps to help you up the steep hill. I remember Dave and I climbing to the top of St Catherine’s Hill when we were first going out together. Years later, we took our children to climb to the top, and they had put the steps in. 

In the 1990s, there was a huge controversy and protests when the government decided to build motorways across England, including the M3 through St Catherines Chalk Hill and Twyford Down, which had water meadows near the motorway site.
